Increasingly, we’re leaving a trail of digital crumbs as we go through life because the Internet’s becoming the basis for social discourse, for commerce, for healthcare, for entertainment. In fifth grade, literally every single one of my classmates had a phone at that time, right? This is a phenomenon that we like we haven’t seen before. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Child Medicine and Psychiatry declared a national mental health emergency. I’d like to turn to a brief video at this point about the risks our children face.Ī new report points to teens use of social media and smartphones as a potential cause of mental distress. In those shadows, they can bully, intimidate, addict, or sexually exploit our kids right in our own homes. They only have to lurk in the shadows online, of Facebook and Snapchat. But in the virtual world, criminals and bullies don’t need to pick a lock or wait outside the playground to hurt our kids. We lock the door and teach our kids not to talk to strangers. In almost every aspect of the real world child safety’s a top priority. The online world offers tremendous opportunities and benefits, but it’s a serious risk and danger to our kids. Tales of terrible results of communication through this device. It is addictive, and we know that, and we also know that it’s threatening and we’re gonna hear some stories today. Why is it that children who can’t really walk on their own, maybe not, not even talk yet, can operate one of these, can punch the screen to move things? There is a captivation that’s taking place there in the minds of young people that continues. This little device here is an amazing source of information and communication, but it also has some properties which we’ll discuss today, but are not obvious as you glance at it. Today, the Senate Judiciary Committee will focus on an issue that impacts every family, keeping our kids safe in the internet age. We owe that to the families and communities who have lost so much. We need to continue the efforts in this committee and this Congress and all work to do so. We, we were able to come together on a bipartisan basis last year to close gaps in our law to help reduce shootings. We’ve lost 5,200 Americans to gunfire already this year and we’re only halfway through February. Last Congress, this committee held 11 hearings on our nation’s gun violence epidemic, and the Senate passed the most significant gun safety reform in nearly 30 years. Now the friends and families of Michigan State students joining that grief, my heart goes out to them. Today, February 14th is already the anniversary of two horrific mass shootings– in Parkland, Florida five years ago in Northern Illinois University in DeKalb 15 years ago.
